The Youth in Lilliput and The Flat are similar forms of expression. Both use large amounts of dark colors. They are both heavy on the black, around the edges. The use of dark gray and black provides and contrast and it does something else. It is hard to say for sure but it almost makes it easier to focus on the content. Black is not a distracting color. Neither of these works is about the background black, though. Both have images manipulated in an eerie way with text that is out of context, and makes no effort to create a context. The user can interpret what they read in whatever way they wish. They both require click to activate the "story" and they are both endearing because of their mysterious style and story-like presentation.
