On each of the 64 floors of the UPMC Steel Building
life goes on.
On the 5th floor, a secretary sits at her desk and answers call after call.
On the 29th floor, a businessman pleads with his angry boss.
On the 62nd floor, two colleagues sneak away for a private minute.
Far beneath all the people in that building
who you will never speak to
never meet
never see
are metal serpents
slithering, winding, waiting for their next prey.
You stand among a handful of other nobodies in the dim, fluorescent lighting.
Waiting.
You glance into the dark tunnel that curves into oblivion. And then, you hear it...
...coming for you.
Sparks sputter from the underbelly. The moans and screeches echo against the conrete walls. Its roar grows louder and louder as it twists around the corner. Beady, red lights burn through the shadows as it approaches.
It opens and engulfs you and the others, closing again, as it slowly winds away.
