Soundscape Design Idea

In my soundscape, I want to recreate an atmosphere of a place of worship, more specifically a church. For some people it is very relaxing and spiritual. Ironically for others, it can be spooky, creepy and anxiety-provoking. I think it will be interesting to imagine such a range of reactions from my general audience.

How I may actually go about doing this is to record outside of St. Paul's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue during the week at the top of different hours just to get the sound of bells ringing. At this time I may get other outside noises. On Saturday or Sunday night (time of mass), I will go back to record the clacking of footsteps on the stairs as parishioners make their way inside. Hopefully, I can attain the sound of the organ or choir from the vestibule or perhaps inside.

A church can be depicted as having a supernatural property whenever you are near it, especially when mass or a ceremony is celebrated. Once again, for some it can give a feeling of safety or hope and for others, guilt or regret on wrongdoings. As such, the time of day shouldn't matter too much for certain aspects such as footsteps walking past, or the bells ringing. When the time would really matter is when I seek more defining noises (the organ, music, etc.).

Revision:

After considering what footage I have, I want to take a more realistic and serious approach to this piece. Instead of trying to make the listener nervous, I want to relax him or her. Perhaps, to make it "strange" I will try to make my piece more uplifting and filled with "positive energy" rather than the creeps.

The goal of this piece is to submerge the listener into such an environment. Hopefully, the listener is relaxed and feels better than he or she did before listening to the soundscape
