Sound Project

Sound Proposal Revised Sound Proposal
For the sound project, I want to record one of my many trips on Port Authority buses. The most interesting array of people tend to ride city buses, from students, to business men and women, and even the local drunk. Bus drivers range from complete silence, only grudgingly answering questions, to the most talkative people I've ever seen. Riders, too, range from utter silence as they listen to their music to friendly neighbors that chat amicably throughout the ride. I want to capture all of these sounds and combine them into one coherent piece about a bus ride. In addition to simply recording the sounds of my bus ride, I want to tell a story and emphasize how the sounds other people force upon us prove disruptive. Each noise they make--their voices, their coughing, their music--interrupts our silence. I plan to highlight how annoying this can be, particularly in the closed setting of the bus. I want to use the gentle hum of the bus as background noise, and interrupt it with the noises of other passengers. As the sounds build and become too annoying to bear, I am going to use the ding and "stop requested" of the bus to halt it. Hopefully this will create a feeling of too much noise and encourage people to be courteous and stop polluting others with their sounds.
